The arrival of autumn is more beautiful than any of the other seasons. The greens of the leaves turn to brilliant golds, reds, and oranges that cling desperately to their branches. Before long, a chilly breeze will launch them off their perch, onto the ground below. These leaves seem to fall absolutely everywhere! This exceptional coin from the Royal Canadian mint is a representation of a maple leaf falling onto the water. Its mintage is listed at only 8,500. In a a unique and innovative way, this design has combined traditional and micro engraving with laser frosting techniques. This is the first time this has ever been done! Design of the Coin. In a natural scene, the reverse of this coin depicts the moment a falling leaf touches the water. A maple leaf the center point of the design, with just its very edge touching the surface of the water. Shining ripples are splendidly engraved as spreading out from the leaf. Through these ripples of water, the reflection of the maple leaf can be seen. Mirrored versions of “20 DOLLARS”, “CANADA”, and “2015” can also be seen reflecting off the surface of the water from their position above the design. Lilyane Coulombe is the brilliant artist behind this beautiful design. The obverse of this coin is graced by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait is by artist Susanna Blunt, and is the portrait used on the obverse of all Canadian coins since 2003. It also has the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II” AND R. History of the Maple Leaf Emblem. The maple leaf has been an emblem of Canada since the beginning of the eighteenth century, by French Canadians along the Saint Lawrence River. At the inaugural meeting of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste in 1834, the maple leaf was proposed as an emblem to represent the Canadian society. The first mayor of Montreal, Jacques Viger, described the maple as the king of our forest… The symbol of the Canadian people. In 1868, it was included in the coat of arms of both Ontario and Quebec, and in 1921 was added to the Canadian coat of arms. From 1876 until 1901, the leaf appeared on all Canadian coins, and has remained on the penny. In 1965, the maple leaf became the centerpiece of the Canadian flag. The maple tree was finally officially recognized as Canada’s national tree in 1996. The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins were introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988.
