From the moment it awakens, the eagle is at work – tending to its nest, soaring high, hunting, feeding its young, and taking pause to eat and rest. Study this apex hunter’s fearsome countenance as he soars through the sky. Dominated by a massive, sharply curved yellow beak, the adult eagle’s distinctive head is covered to the neck with long, smooth white feathers. The arrangement of the feathers above its large golden eyes gives the adult eagle a frowning appearance that is perhaps a factor in the bird’s symbolic associations with power. The most important attribute on this iconic head, however, is the eyes. It is this gifted vision that empowers the eagle to spot relatively small prey underwater or in grassy plains while soaring hundreds of meters in the air despite these prey animals’ natural camouflage. This premium coin is part of the Royal Canadian Mints 2014 five-coin series of fine silver, gold, and platinum coins featuring four day in the life scenes of the iconic Bald Eagle. A beautiful full color portrait of a bald eagle soaring over a wilderness lake. Designed by Canadian artist Claudio D’Angelo, this coin features a unique portrait of a Bald Eagle in flight. As the eagle turns abruptly in mid-air, angling itself to dive, you are presented with a view of the graceful raptor’s underside. Its outstretched wings, dark body, powerful legs, white tail and head, and yellow beak and talons are presented in stunning detail and full color through selective paint application. In the background, we see the isolated shoreline of the body of water below. A steep pine-covered hill rises to the left, its rocky shore dotted with islands and outcroppings. In the far distance, a similar shoreline rises on the opposite side of the water. Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.
