Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1933, Superman was originally written in the context of the Great Depression, with his first appearance being in Action Comics #1 issued in June of 1938. He is written as having been born on the planet Krypton, and was launched into space as a baby by his parents just prior to the mass destruction of his home planet. Growing up, the new parents find that the boy has unusual strength and abilities. With the name’Clark Kent,’ he eventually grows to adulthood where he serves as a reporter for’The Daily Planet,’ the newspaper of the city in which he resides, Metropolis. One of the main points of his character is that nobody is to find his true identity, in that he slips under cover to switch back and forth from Clark Kent to Superman (and vice-versa) while he does his deeds of good for the people of Metropolis. As his villians find out, Superman is vulnerable only to the metal’Kryptonite,’ a radioactive mineral that destroyed his home planet. He is otherwise invulnerable to his attackers and is known to be able to stop speeding trains, catch flying bullets, leap tall buildings in a single bound, and has x-ray vision – powers that were exposed in the stories in the original series of comics, then later portrayed in a television series starring George Reeves. Other radio shows, television series, and movies would be released over the years portraying Superman, one of the most notable being Richard Donners”Superman’ starring the late Christopher Reeve. Superman is distracted by Lois Lane, a woman for whom he has feelings, but cannot allow to know his true identity. He and she know each other under his’Clark Kent’ cover, but she is unaware that he is also Superman. Superman coin series by the Royal Canadian Mint.
