Design of the Coin. On the reverse of this coin is a natural scene depicting the moment a falling leaf touches the water. In the center of the engraving is the maple leaf with just its very edge touching the surface of the water. Brilliant, shining ripples are shown spreading out from the leaf. Through the ripples of water, a reflection of the maple leaf can be seen. The words “20 DOLLARS”, “CANADA”, and “2015” are inscribed above the scene, but are then show again as a mirrored reflection in the water, at the bottom of the coin. This incredible design is the work of Canadian Artist, Lilyane Coulombe. A portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, graces the obverse of this coin. The design of artist Susanna Blunt, this is the portrait used on the obverse of all Canadian coins since 2003. It also has the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II” AND R. History of the Maple Leaf Emblem. The maple leaf had been adopted as a Canadian emblem as early as the beginning of the eighteenth century, by French Canadians along the Saint Lawrence River. Its popularity was increased when, at the inaugural meeting of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste in 1834, the maple leaf was one of emblems proposed to represent the society. Jacques Viger, the first mayor of Montreal, described the maple as the king of our forest… The symbol of the Canadian people. In 1868, it was included in the coat of arms of both Ontario and Quebec, and was added to the Canadian coat of arms in 1921. From 1876 until 1901, the leaf appeared on all Canadian coins, and remained on the penny even after 1901. In 1965, the maple leaf became the centerpiece of the Canadian flag. While the maple leaf flag celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2015, the maple tree was only officially recognized as Canada’s national tree in 1996. The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins were introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988. Why add this coin to your collection? This beautiful proof struck coin is not one you want to miss out on.
