The reverse was designed by Celia Godkin, a Royal Canadian Mint artist who has also designed several coins in the past as well. This design features the Giant Sulphur Butterfly drinking the nectar of a wild strawberry flower. The Giant Sulphur Butterflies wings are colorized and are the main feature in the design. The detailing in the wings are breath-taking; they appear life like with the shading and visible veins inscribed into the coin. This design of the Giant Sulphur reveals the eyespot on the outside of the wing in perfect detail. In the background of this reverse is a vine of wild strawberry flowers, which is a favorite for this species. Although the flowers are not colorized, the details in the pedals, like the detail in the Giant Sulphur, bring the design to life. Inscribed in the design are the inscriptions, CANADA, 20 DOLLARS, and 2015. The obverse of this coin bears the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, as designed by Susanna Blunt. The design bears the inscription, “Elizabeth II, ” and D. REGINA, around the portrait of Her Majesty. This has been the standard obverse of Canadian coinage since the year 2003. This is the first design of Queen Elizabeth II in which a crown is not pictured. Queen Elizabeth II follows the footsteps of her father, King George VI, in this decision.
