Designed and crafted from. 9999 fine Silver, cast in a 2 troy oz. Size which weighs in at a generous 62.67 grams and measures 54mm in diameter. It was made with the 2015 date inscribed as well as a design of the Merchant Navy ships as they may have appeared at that time. It was created by the artist, Yves Bérubé (reverse), T. Paget (obverse) on a proof finished coin. They have been made in an extremely limited amount of just 5,000 coins. The year 1939 marked the beginning of the second world war which would end up being the longest continuous military campaign ever fought in the waters of the Atlantic. For a very long 6 years, the navy would be overwhelmed during the campaign by the Nazi’s and it was the Canadian Merchant Navy that was crucial in maintaining the vital supply chains for safe transportation through these war torn waters of the Atlantic. These Merchant Navy ships would serve as the vital transport vessels of the food supply, personnel, fuel and weapons for the allied troops. According to Rear Admiral Leonard Murray, Commander in chief of the Canadian North Atlantic; The Battle of the Atlantic was not won by any navy or air force, it was won by the courage, fortitude and determination of the British and Allied merchant navy. That was a BOLD statement to make and a very real assessment as well. Without the necessary supplies and personnel traveling through the Atlantic waterways, the Allies would have been starved into submission to end the conflict. It was this heroic and vidal effort of the merchant navy that help to win the war. Approximately 25,000 voyages were made by the merchant navy which delivered 165,000 million tonnes of cargo. The obverse of this coin was designed by T. Paget and is the effigy of King George VI along with the inscriptions of “GEORGIVS VID : G : REX ET IND : IMP :”. The makers initials are located under his neck “HP”. The finish is a proof finish that has a mirror reflectivity to it. Paget has done an excellent job of creating this effigy of the King on this proof silver coin. The image is of the ocean steamer SS Duchess of York (on the left) with a full plume of steam billowing from the funnels. This ocean liner was requisitioned as a troopship during the war and belonged to a a convoy dubbed “Faith”. One of the convoy’s escort ships wasthe Tribal-class destroyer HMCS Iroquois (right), has unleashed anti-aircraft fire against the two Focke-Wulf Fw-200 Kondors which are attacking the steamer – but it is all in vain against this airborne attack. All 34 crew aboard the SS Duchess of York were lost in this attack. This coin is to honor those valliant men and women in this colossal struggle. Precious metals markets are fluid.
