This was done in anticipation of the upcoming centennial of Confederation in 1967. From various design submissions, the parliamentary committee responsible for this task ultimately chose a red stylized maple leaf on a white ground flanked by two red bars. The colors red and white had been Canada’s national colors since 1921, and the red maple leaf had been in official use by the Canadian military and by Canadian Olympic athletes since the turn of the 20th century. Eleventh coin in the O Canada 1/2 oz. Silver coin series, focusing on iconic Canadian images. This coin is engraved in exquisite detail and celebrates one of Canada’s most important national symbols: the maple leaf. The only 2013 “O Canada” ½ oz. Silver matte proof series coin to feature color. Struck in 99.99% fine silver! This coin was designed by Canadian artist Emily Damstra. It features a hand holding three colored maple leaves. Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell case lined with flock and protected by a red & white’beauty’ box. Check out my other items. PHOTOGRAPHS – Most coins are photographed with up to three different backdrops: black, matte aluminum, and white. The “backdrop” is behind the camera, not behind the coin. Many coins are highly reflective, picking up the color of the backdrop. Large areas that appear black on proof coins are usually the mirror bright silver surfaces reflecting a black backdrop. When a listing offers multiples of the same coin for sale, typically only one coin is photographed. Since all of the coins offered in the listing are essentially identical, the coin photographed is representative of all of the coins offered. What is a Troy Ounce? When someone speaks of something weighing an ounce, the chances are that they are referring to an Avoirdupois Ounce, which is the seldom-used “official” name for the ordinary ounce. Bathroom scales, kitchen scales, produce scales, and other “ordinary” scales calibrated in ounces use the ordinary “Avoirdupois” ounces. However gold, silver, platinum, and gunpowder are measured using a different system of weight – the Troy Ounce. The two ounces, Avoirdupois and Troy, are not the same. An “ordinary” (Avoirdupois) Ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams – or 437.5 grains. A Troy Ounce is exactly 31.1034768 grams – or 480 grains. The “price per ounce” of gold, silver, and platinum quoted in the precious metals and commodities markets are always for Troy Ounces. Troy Ounces are the measurement used worldwide for precious metals. This includes bullion weights; the commodity market’s price-per-ounce of gold, silver, platinum (also the other rare “Platinum Group Metals” rhodium, ruthenium, osmium, palladium and iridium); the precious metal “spot price”; and graphs that track the price changes of precious metals over time.
